What’s New at Hillhead 2016

Next month Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire, will once again host the world’s biggest working quarry exhibition. From 28–30 June more than 460 UK and international suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services for the quarrying, construction and recycling industries will be in attendance with a huge range of exhibits on static display and/or live demonstration. As always, many of the exhibitors will be using the show as a platform for the launch of their latest products and offerings, and the following pages provide a glimpse of just some of the new equipment, systems and services that visitors to Hillhead will be able to see for the first time. 

Environmental equipment manufacturers ACE Plant will be exhibiting a full range of dust-suppression equipment, together with a selection of products from their extreme-duty Bundie Bowser range. There will also be a working demonstration of the new, electronically controlled DS2000 dust-suppression unit alongside the ACE DF7500 fully self-contained fan-based Dust Fighter, 110V smart portable mini Dust Fighter and Quickspray telehandler/loader-mounted dust-suppression unit. Static exhibits will include several different types of Bundie Bowser models ranging from 1,000- to 9,000-litres capacity, with or without integral AdBlue tanks. Another product on show will be ACE Plant’s Bucket Bundie.

 

Anaconda will be using this year’s Hillhead as the UK launch pad for their brand new DF514 tracked scalping screen. The machine has a 14ft x 5ft (4.27m x 1.52m) double-deck screenbox, a Cat 4.4 water-cooled engine (100hp), belt or apron feeder option, three integral stockpiling conveyors and a crawler track chassis for ease of movement around/off site. The unit has hydraulic folding hopper sides as standard, hydraulic screen angle adjustable between 15-19°, hydraulic screenbox raise/lower for ease of mesh change and wired-in remote as standard (radio remote is available as an option). 

Atlas Copco will be unveiling a new range of versatile and cost-effective construction equipment, including their Series 8 portable compressors and the latest Dynapac CityPaver.

Also on display will be the company’s hand-held hydraulic range, compaction equipment, new HiLight towers, mobile generators, diesel/electric pumps, concrete equipment and a host of attachments and pneumatic tools. Road construction equipment will include asphalt and soil rollers, and Dynapac wheeled pavers. 

EP Barrus will be showcasing the latest portfolio of power solutions from some of the world’s leading emission-compliant diesel and petrol engine manufacturers, including Yanmar, John Deere and Kawasaki. Products featured will include TNV-CR water-cooled series industrial diesel engines, which are already prepared for the introduction of EU Stage 5 regulations in 2019. Also on show will be John Deere Final Tier 4/Stage 4 engines, which offer uninterrupted power, high reliability and low cost of ownership, driving crushers, excavators, loaders, dumpers, gensets and air compressors.

Hillhead 2016 will see the UK preview of Bell Equipment’s new B60E articulated dumptruck. Powered by the latest Mercedes Benz engine, the B60E continues the Bell tradition of offering one of the lowest cost-per-tonne machines on the market, with an economical drivetrain that delivers significantly lower fuel consumption than a traditional rigid truck. Alongside the B60E, Bell will be showcasing their B25E, B30E, B40E and B50E ADTs. The company will also be highlighting a number of features designed to minimize downtime and enhance performance, including QuadCool, an industry-leading cooling system that is unique to Bell loaders in the UK.

Bobcat have confirmed their product display at this year’s show will include some of the latest micro- and mini-excavators, skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders and attachments. Among the key exhibits will the T590 compact tracked loader and E10 and E26 excavators. And making a first appearance at Hillhead will be the T450 tracked loader, which has been designed to fill the gap in the range between the T110 and T590 models. Well suited for work in tight-space applications, such as recovering materials that drop under bulk-handling conveyor systems in quarries and mines, the T450 is powered by a Bobcat D24 turbocharged diesel engine (61hp), providing 25% more power than its predecessor. 

Milling, paving and compaction equipment specialists Bomag (GB) will be launching their new BM 2000/75 milling machine and 26-tonne BW 226 DI-5 self-propelled single-drum roller, alongside other new and updated models. The paving display will feature the BF 300 P and BF 600 P2 pavers and two of the company’s heavyweight tandem rollers – the 8-tonne BW 151 AD-5 and 10-tonne BW 161 ADO-5 with ‘TanGO’ oscillating vibration. Other products on show will include: hand-guided vibrating plates and tampers; and a comprehensive range of light tandem rollers from the 800mm BW 80 AD-5 to the 1,470mm BW 138 AD-5 featuring integrated Economizer real-time compaction measurement. 

Case will be showcasing a wide range of models including: the new D-Series crawler excavators; wheel loaders; and the company’s largest ever dozer – the 2050M. Also on show will be an extensive range of equipment from the compact line, such as mini- and midi- excavators, backhoe loaders and skid-steer loaders. Taking centre stage on the stand will be four new D-Series excavator models – the CX130D, CX490D, CX500D and CX290D MH, a 30-tonne unit designed specifically for the materials handling market. Also on display will be a number of F-Series wheel loaders including the 621FXT, 821F and 921F models, while the heavy-duty 1121F unit will be in action in the demonstration area. 

At Hillhead 2016 Casella will be introducing a new improved version of their Boundary Guardian. The system is essentially a plug-and-play solution for web-based, real-time remote monitoring of noise, dust and vibration emissions, which allows users to ensure compliance with regulatory limits all-year round. The new version is vastly reduced in size making it easier to install and less obtrusive. There is also a new dedicated website where users can gain access to their data (available 24h a day, seven days a week) with email and optional text alerts

Cormac Engineering will be exhibiting energy-efficient bitumen tanks and Marini asphalt plants, including the full Top Tower range and the recently launched 200 tonnes/h XPRESS 2500 unit. The standard XPRESS 2500 model features five mobile cold feeders which are mounted on a two-axle semitrailer, with the option of having a RAP feed and support divider for a mechanical shovel. It also incorporates a hydraulic power unit which means the entire plant can be lifted and positioned for work in the shortest time possible using hydraulic cylinders.

Exhibiting at Hillhead for the second time, Datatag ID will be promoting their latest offering – the Micro-CESAR. The system carries an integrated QR code, which provides the same effect that the CESAR scheme has in deterring theft and assisting in recovery. According to Datatag ID, CESAR has contributed to more than a 70% reduction in the theft of large construction equipment since it was launched in 2007. Micro-CESAR is expected to make a similar impact protecting small construction and landscaping equipment, such as power tools, cut-off saws, hand-held hydraulic breakers and compaction plates.

There will be a number of new Stage IV-compliant machine launches on the Doosan stand, including the first showing of the company’s flagship 52-tonne DX530LC-5 and 25-tonne DX255LC-5 crawler excavator models, while the top-of-the-range DL550-5 wheel loader will also be demonstrated for the first time in the UK. Also on display will be the DL420-5 wheel loader and a selection of portable generators, compressors and mobile lighting systems. 

Ecoblast Supplies Ltd, specialists in the design, manufacture and supply of high-performance industrial cleaning equipment, will announce the launch of a new range of industrial pressure washers at Hillhead 2016. The units have been specially designed to operate in arduous conditions, particularly construction and facilities management environments, and are available in diesel, petrol and electric versions, including the bowser and PTO models. 

Recycling equipment specialists Edge Innovate will be launching their new MC1400 tracked materials classifier alongside the popular TRM516 mobile trommel and Slayer XL slow-speed shredder. Available in tracked, semi-trailer or static chassis formats, the MC1400 allows operators to separate up to four different fractions as standard, including: heavy (eg aggregates, glass etc); mid-weight (eg wood) and light (eg plastic, paper, film etc). It utilizes controlled airflow as a separation medium and provides an efficient solution for the cleaning of compost and biomass fractions, with the ability to separate heavy and mid-weight fractions from lights. 

Taking centre stage on the Hill Engineering stand will be the new award-winning TEFRA Tilt hitch, designed to offer the added benefits of increased productivity and versatility in multiple applications. Available for machine sizes ranging from 3 to 20 tonnes, the TEFRA Tilt coupler gives operators greater flexibility thanks to the HKS XtraTilt power actuator which delivers 180° tilt functionality. Also on show will be the company’s Titan buckets.   

Among the Hitachi products making their first appearance at Hillhead will be the recently launched 50-tonne ZX490-6 excavator. The first UK model was delivered to Dorset-based Lovell Stone Group and features the latest Tier 4 Final engine and an increased hydraulic pump capacity compared with its predecessor – the ZX470-5. This allows for the use of hydraulic tools and demolition attachments when required, making it ideal for heavy mining and quarrying work. The machine is also equipped with the new Hitachi HIOS IIIB hydraulic system which helps to reduce fuel consumption. Other Hitachi equipment on show will include: the ZX870-5 excavator; and ZW370-5 and ZW310-6 wheel loaders.  

Visitors to the HPC Kaeser stand will be able to find new and proven portable compressor models on display, including the latest M125 which combines a free air delivery of 10m3/min at 12 bar with exceptional dependability and efficiency. The compressor also features the company’s advanced SIGMA control mobile (SCM) engine and compressor management control system. 

Hydrastore, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of hydraulic systems and components, will be showing a wide variety of products, including: the new Kawasaki K8V closed-circuit piston pump; Thermal Transfer BOL and MA coolers; engine cooling combination packages; and new protective sand-blast grids. These will feature alongside: the Hydrocontrol and Atos ranges of directional valves and controls; and fixed-displacement gear-pumps from Ronzio. 

Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe (HHIE) will be unveiling a host of new machines, including models from their latest HX range of excavators and HL range of wheel loaders. On demonstration will be the 52-tonne HX520L crawler excavator and 31-tonne HL980 wheel loader. Other products on display will include: the HL970 and HL960 wheel loader models; HX480L, HX300L and HX220L excavators; and the R80CR-9A mini-excavator. According to HHIE, the HX series excavators provide higher productivity, faster operation and can load trucks up to 5% quicker than the 9A-Series. The new HL wheel loaders focus on safety and boast numerous environmentally friendly features, including automatic engine shutdown, an Eco Pedal mode and ‘travel speed limit control’. 

JCB will be showing a full range of tailor-made machines for the quarrying, construction and recycling industries across two stands, including a Hillhead debut for the company’s ground-breaking Hydradig 110W. Providing a brand new concept in tool carrying, the JCB Hydradig has a sturdy all-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer chassis based on the equipment manufacturer’s proven Loadall telescopic handler. The machine is powered by an Ecomax Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim diesel engine, providing 81kW (108hp) and industry-leading levels of low rev/min torque. According to JCB, the compact Hydradig unit offers ‘unparalleled visibility, stability, manoeuvrability, mobility and serviceability’.

As well as showcasing exhibits, John King Chains, manufacturers of chains for the construction industry, will be highlighting their ongoing investment in technology, including the installation of a new 5kW fibre laser, considered to be the most advanced equipment of its type in the market. This is complemented by the company’s acquisition of an additional ABB welding robot principally used for forged fork link chain flight fixing. John King Chains will also be promoting the success of their global expansion programme, as William Wadsworth, business development, explained: ‘It has been our ambition to develop the company into a global business, which has seen our chain production and distribution established in North and South America, South Africa, Central Europe and Asia.’

Kubota UK, the market-leading suppliers of compact construction machinery, recently achieved the landmark of their 50,000th excavator sale in the British and Irish market. The K008-3 micro-excavator has been delivered, via dealers Boss Plant, to one of Kubota’s longest standing construction customers, Hawes Plant & Tool Hire Ltd. To celebrate the 50,000th sale, Kubota will be exhibiting their original Kubota KH10 model at Hillhead, where it will be positioned next to a ‘special edition’ gold-painted KX-71 machine, considered to be a modern-day equivalent of the KH10 in terms of its size and power. The company will then donate the ‘gold-digger’ to the Lighthouse Club, which will be auctioning it off at its prestigious summer ball, with all proceeds going to the construction industry charity.

As usual, Liebherr will have a number of earthmoving machines and concrete technology products on their stand. Among the main highlights this year will be one of the new generation of XPower large wheel loaders – the L 566. This Stage IV/Tier 4F-compliant machine is said to offer fuel savings of up to 30% and up to 20% more breakout force. Also on show will be the new PR 726 crawler tractor, which weighs in at between 16 to 19.8 tonnes and provides the operator with outstanding all-round visibility. Meanwhile, working at the quarry face will be the new 32-tonne L 586 wheel loader, the largest model in the new XPower range.

With global fuel quality standards declining and engine technologies vastly improving, industry specialists Liquid Management Solutions (LMS) will be demonstrating a selection of fuel quality control/filtration solutions to help combat fleet downtime due to poor-quality fuel. Moreover, with the introduction of Stage IV/Tier 4 final emission regulations now in place for construction and heavy plant equipment, the company will be displaying a range of proven solutions for safely storing and dispensing AdBlue. Also on demonstration will be LMS’s extensive range of fuel-management packages, including their industry-recognized CACTUS on-line automatic vehicle-recognition technology, which is used in many of the UK’s largest quarrying and mining operations.

Manitou UK will be exhibiting a selection of machines from their extensive range of materials-handling and powered-access products at Hillhead, including the heavy-lift, rough-terrain MHT1490 telehandler, the MLT845 telehandler, the multi-purpose MH25-4 semi-rough-terrain forklift, the 160ATJ+ articulated platform, and the 100VJR electric vertical-lift platform. The Manitou Group’s product portfolio also includes the Gehl and Mustang brands, which will be represented at Hillhead by the Mustang 2200R skid-steer loader and two new Gehl articulated loaders – the 650 and 750 – which will be available in the second half of 2016 and represent the largest units in the Gehl range.

Martin Engineering, one of the leading innovators of products and solutions to make bulk materials handling, cleaner, safer and more productive, will be showcasing their brand new ‘CleanScrape’ belt cleaning range, which, since its UK launch in late 2015, is said to have been a huge success thanks to its radical new design and high cleaning efficiency. In addition to the company’s other specialist belt-cleaning products, on display will be a full range of conveyor transfer point products which, when combined, help eliminate dust and spillage on even the most difficult transfer points. Martin Engineering’s newly launched Service Programme will also be demonstrated, along with the company’s industry-recognized ‘Foundations 4’ publication and training course.

Mentor Training Solutions, providers of nationwide operator training on mobile plant, fork-lift trucks, cranes, access platforms and mobile scaffolding towers, now incorporate Serac UK, providing the extractives and mineral processing industry with a complete training, qualification and assessment service. The Mentor team will be on hand at the show to discuss new courses recently introduced under the MPQC Operator Competency Scheme, alongside the  IOSH Managing safely forklift operations and Safely working with lift trucks safety management courses. Serac also have a number of additions to their portfolio, including a new weighbridge qualification and additional resource for completing Level 2 qualifications.

Having invested in a new Phoenix 280G bevel gear grinding machine in the summer of 2015, Ondrives will be making their first appearance at Hillhead to reveal their state-of-the-art range of ground spiral bevel and hypoid gears. The Phoenix 280G machine is said to represent a significant leap forward in gear-machining technology that will establish a new benchmark in bevel gear grinding for gears up to 280mm in diameter. Ondrives say this capability will take them to the next level in terms of what they can achieve and should reassure customers that they will receive only the best-quality gears.

Ontaris will be at Hillhead for the first time to demonstrate their electronic Explosives Stock Book, which allows users meet the traceability of explosives requirements in accordance with the latest EU directives. Ontaris say the primary benefit of the Explosives Stock Book is its simplicity and clarity. Goods movements (explosives and accessories) can be clearly observed and monitored on the tablet PC and all processes can be performed on site with no Internet connection required. Other benefits include: a high degree of security with integrated track and trace function; no changes to existing IT infrastructure; and ease of operation.

This year marks an important milestone in the history of Powerscreen. Having achieved five decades of power and success, the company will be using Hillhead 2016 as a platform to launch its 50th anniversary celebrations in the UK. Among the various Powerscreen products on display and demonstration at the show will be a number of machines making their UK debut, including the new Trakpactor 550 mobile horizontal-shaft impact crusher, the new post-screen version of the Premiertrak 400 mobile primary jaw crusher, and the new three-deck version of the Chieftain 2200 mobile inclined screen.  

Weighing specialists Precia-Molen will be re-introducing the ‘Shering’ range of weighbridges at Hillhead 2016. Manufactured in the UK using all British steel coupled with an advanced coating protection system technology, the weighbridges are designed to meet the needs of users looking for dependable, long-life operation in arduous range of industrial process control equipment, from dynamic weighing and volumetric control to fully Board of Trade-approved belt scales, will be introduced at the show. Also on display will be a range of peripheral equipment including ANPR cameras, traffic barriers, card readers and RFID printers.

Making its world debut on the RDS Technology stand at Hillhead 2016 will be the new Loadmaster α50. Designed to help increase loading efficiency, cut vehicle movements on site and ensure lorries are correctly loaded first time, the enhanced colour touchscreen device is a replacement for the Loadmaster 8kiX on-board weighing system for larger loaders. The Loadmaster α50 will line up alongside other RDS products including: the Loadex 100 retrofittable scale for tracked and wheeled excavators and material handlers; Loadmaster α100 on-board weighing scale for wheel loaders; Weighlog α10 for smaller loaders and skid-steers; and iSOSYNC PC software for job data transfer between PC and loader/excavator.

Ridgway Rentals, suppliers of some of the latest-specification plant machinery, including loading shovels, excavators, dozers and dumptrucks, to the UK’s construction, quarrying, demolition and recycling industries, are marking their first appearance at Hillhead with an intriguing inviting to visitors to call in at their stand to see a piece of machinery that, they say, should be the only one of its kind on display at the show!

Samson Materials Handling, designers and manufacturers of mobile equipment for effective conveying of materials in diverse mining and quarrying applications, will be showcasing a range solutions and expertise gleaned from almost 50 years’ experience, including their highly manoeuvrable Stormajor stockpile/barge/ship/rail loader with its out-loading boom and controlled discharge rates. For larger shipping requirements the Samson Shiploader can be combined with twin Samson mobile material feeders to achieve peak loading rates in excess of 2,000 tonnes/h. Samson will also be promoting their Eco Hopper, a dust-controlled grab-unloading hopper that offers an ecologically sensitive solution capable of handling up to 5,000 tonnes/h.

Sandvik will be taking advantage of Hillhead 2016 to highlight the total solutions nature of their product range, with a focus on mobile crushers and screens as well as recent developments in tools, consumables, wear parts and solutions from Customer Services. Additionally, a number of UK and global product launches are planned, including the brand new pre-screen version of the QJ341 jaw crusher. Lining up alongside the various mobile crushers and screens on display will be other equipment including Bretec breakers, a Ranger DX800 drill rig, and a CH540 stationary cone crusher. What makes Hillhead truly exciting and different from other shows, however, is the live action at the quarry face, and this year Sandvik will be putting four machines through their paces: the QJ341 jaw crusher with its new pre-screen; a QS331 cone crusher with hanging screen; and a QJ241 jaw crusher feeding a QA335 Doublescreen.

Selwood Pumps, who have been designing, manufacturing, renting and selling mobile contractors pumps for more than 60 years, will be showing a range of pumps designed for quarrying and mining applications, including the brand new S150M. Featuring Selwood’s proven Selprime automatic self-priming technology, this versatile, high-performance, solids-handling, medium-head pump is suitable for multiple uses, including: waste-water applications; long-distance water transfer, and dewatering for sites and quarries. It complements Selwood’s existing ‘S’ range of solids-handling pumps and will be available housed in a super-silent canopy, open-set skid mounted or as a pump end only.

SKF will be demonstrating how to maximize staff productivity through optimum asset reliability in the quarrying sector. Visitors to the company’s stand will see how innovative solutions have been developed to increase the availability of machinery and reduce maintenance in some of the toughest industrial environments. On show will be the SKF three-barrier solution, ‘split-to-the-shaft’ Cooper roller bearings, the abrasion-resistant SKF Speedi-Sleeve, and electric motor test equipment including the EXP4000 dynamic motor analyzer.

Exhibiting at Hillhead for the first time, Australian crushing and screening machine manufacturers Striker will be using this year’s show to launch their all-new USA range. Based around the standard Striker machines, this new range features a number of modifications to ensure clients in the US get robustly built machines that are customized to their particular requirements. For example, the H3000R – the baby of the impactor range – has been designed for the small quarry operator or recycling contractor and can be used as either a single-pass or closed-circuit machine. Striker will also be showing a J-series jaw crusher and a HD-series impactor, both of which were designed primarily for use on tracked machines but have also been installed in many fixed and portable plant operations around Asia and Australia over the past 15 years.

Celebrating 20 years in the UK and Ireland, Takeuchi will be at Hillhead 2016 with a range of new mini-excavator equipment, including their 9-tonne TB290 model and 8-tonne TB280FR zero-swing model, both with new-style cabs. Alongside these will be the new Hybrid Electric 1.6-tonne mini-excavator, designed for use in internal/zero-emission environments.

This year Terex Finlay will have their largest ever presence at Hillhead with no fewer than 12 mobile machines on display and/or demonstration. Among the new models will be the C-1540, C-1545 and C-1554 cone crushers; the I-140 impact crusher; and the 674 three-deck inclined screen. Terex Finlay will also be previewing the new I-140RS impact crusher, which features an on-board detachable sizing screen and recirculation conveyor, and is due to be launched in the third quarter of this year. Another new machine making its debut appearance at this year’s show will be the 873 Spaleck heavy-duty recycling screen.

Tesab Engineering, specialist manufacturers of crushing and stockpiling products, will be launching their new 700i jaw crusher at Hillhead 2016. Based on the company’s proven 10570 model, the 700i is a lighter, more streamlined machine with the ability to produce 400+ tonnes/h. In addition, Tesab’s new 800i jaw crusher will be put through its paces in the demonstration area along with a Trackstack 8042T mobile stockpiler.

Thomas Auto Injection Centre are well known worldwide for their technical expertise and parts sales for fuel-injection related products within the off-highway, plant and construction industries. As authorized distributors and repairers of OE brands such as Yanmar, Bosch, Delphi, Stanadyne and Denso, they are specialists in the latest common-rail diesel-injection technology. At this year’s show the company will be launching its new partnership with Alliant Power, who offer an extensive range of Cat and Perkins products, and new-to-the-range John Deere common-rail injectors.

Hillhead 2016 will see leading tyre and wheel manufacturers and suppliers Titan Distribution (UK) showcasing a whole host of products for use in mining and quarrying applications, including the company’s unique three-piece IFM wheel, as well as its standard five-piece earthmover wheel, which is suitable for use on wheel loaders and ADTs. Also on display will be a selection of construction and mining tyres for vehicles ranging from small skid-steers and backhoe loaders to large wheel loaders and ADTs. Alongside their core tyre range, Titan International’s innovative low-sidewall (LSW) tyre will also be on show. The LSW tyre features a lower aspect ratio and a smaller sidewall than a standard tyre, resulting in an increase in wheel diameter without an increase in the outside diameter of the tyre, thereby delivering enhanced equipment stability on site.

As well as a full range of Italvibras rotary electric and hydraulic vibrators and geared linear exciters, and Findeva pneumatic rotary and linear vibrators, Vibratechniques say a new range of inclined-screen rotary exciter cells and flange-mounted electric vibrators will be on show to the UK quarrying market for the first time at Hillhead 2016.

Volvo Group will be exhibiting an array of their latest hard and soft products, some of which will be on show for the first time in Great Britain. With all Volvo general-purpose equipment now fully compliant with Tier IV emission regulations, visitors to the stand will be able to see the latest excavators, wheel loaders, ADTs and paving equipment, along with representative models from the company’s compact excavator range. The stand will also feature representative models from Volvo Trucks, including the 750hp FH16 and two models from the FMX range. In addition, Volvo Penta will have a very strong presence with several of their latest industrial engines and applications on display. Hillhead 2016 will also be the venue for the Volvo Operators’ Club heats, where suitably qualified contestants can compete in three disciplines to win a place at the European finals taking place in Austria later this year. 

Since 1986 Wright Engineering have been involved in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of innovative materials-handling solutions in the aggregates, power and renewable energy sectors, among others. The company has also supplied and installed steel structures, buildings, walkways and maintenance access, as well as processing plant, at sites throughout the UK and overseas. And since the end of 2015 Wright Engineering have also been the custodians of the Locker electromagnetic vibratory feeder (formerly part of Rotex Europe). To complement their existing capabilities in the aggregate sector, an example from the Locker feeder range will be on display on the company’s stand at this year’s show.
