Veolia UK claim number one spot

Latest BDS survey lists company as the largest composting operator in the UK

BASED on an analysis of the current market undertaken by BDS Marketing Research, Veolia are now the largest composting company in the UK, helped by their acquisition of six sites at the end of 2014.

Other companies making up the top five are Viridor, SJB, Material Change and Tamar Organics. BDS estimate that the top 10 composting companies now represent 32% of the total market.

The consultancy firm has also found that investment in new composting facilities is pushing the volume of waste materials handled by composting operators towards 4 million tonnes a year.

‘We are seeing investment in newer and higher volume facilities by companies such as Material Change and Greenways,’ said Julian Clapp, principal consultant at BDS.

‘These are often in support of local authority contracts that have been won recently. In addition, other companies – including Envar and Vital Earth – are looking to expand capacities at existing sites.’

BDS Marketing Research’s Directory of Composting Sites includes details of around 260 windrow and in-vessel composting sites – by company, address, output and other details, together with an analysis of industry trends.
