US climate partnerships for Aggregate Industries

AS a part of a continued commitment to sustainable practices, Aggregate Industries US have entered into new partnerships with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders programme and the Cool Climate Concrete programme. Both partnerships were announced during the recent International Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Chicago, Illinois.

Launched in February 2002, EPA’s Climate Leaders is an industry-government partnership that works to develop long-term comprehensive corporate climate change strategies by embracing energy efficiency, green power, and technological innovation as sound business investments. By becoming a Climate Leaders partner, Aggregate Industries US have pledged to reduce their company-wide greenhouse gas emissions.

Cool Climate Concrete, which is funded through the Climate Trust, a non-profit organization in Oregon that implements offsets for carbon dioxide emissions in excess of Oregon’s carbon dioxide standard, is a monitored and verified offset programme that encourages reductions in the use of ASTM C150 Portland cement through the incorporation of slag, fly ash and other cementitious materials in concrete. This new partnership will allow Aggregate Industries US to provide carbon offset credits gained from the use of supplementary cementitious materials in the production of ready-mixed concrete.

Commenting on the partnerships, Derek Young, Aggregate Industries’ advisor for US corporate social responsibility, said: ‘The EPA’s Climate Leaders program emphasizes our commitment to taking significant action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, while the Cool Climate Concrete program underscores our goals of offsetting carbon emissions.

‘We believe it is the hallmark of a responsible company to address these important issues and we look forward to building relationships with both Climate Leaders and Cool Climate Concrete.’
