Tarmac SuDs system available in range of colours

ARCHITECTS and specifiers looking to inject colour into public-realm schemes while providing effective water management, can now draw upon a porous asphalt SuDS system which is available in a range of colours.

TarmacDry, a proven SuDS system from Tarmac Ltd, has been successfully combined with Mastertint, the company’s light-coloured asphalt, which includes specialist, durable pigment in a colourless bituminous binder to ensure that the colour is retained throughout the product.

James Freeman, national special products manager at Tarmac Ltd, said: ‘Whether it’s the regeneration of urban streets, seafronts or the creation of new cycle paths, coloured asphalt is increasingly being chosen by specifiers to enhance street scenes.

‘As well as being visually appealing, these areas also need to be future-proofed to deal with intense rainfall, so we felt it was important to offer a practical and proven system which can deliver both stormwater management as well as contributing to good urban design.’

Developed for lightly trafficked areas, pedestrian footways and car parks, TarmacDry is an alternative to permeable block paving. It effectively manages surface water by allowing it to pass through its porous structure into a granular reservoir layer. This acts as a temporary store, before discharging at a controlled rate into the subsoil, drainage ponds or into the primary drainage system.

The combined TarmacDry/Mastertint system is available in a range of bespoke colours and offers long-term durability by combining quartzite aggregate and durable light-reflecting pigments and high-quality polymers with colourless binders to enhance the mechanical stability of the asphalt mix.
