Tarmac ‘Golden Duster’ award for infant school class

Good housekeeping award presented to pupils from Robert Miles Infant School in Bingham

PUPILS at Robert Miles Infant School in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, have received an unusual accolade – the ‘Golden Duster Award’ – from Tarmac’s nearby Barnstone cement plant.

The prize (a goodie bag for each of the children) went to the school’s Sycamore Class for having the tidiest classroom for a whole term.

Staff from Tarmac’s Barnstone works have been sharing experiences from the plant and educating the children about the importance of good housekeeping to keep their site as safe and hazard-free as possible.

Josie Morrissey, environmental manager, and Niki Heath, HR/customer service and finance administrator, recently went along to speak at a school assembly and present the award.

Niki Heath explained: ‘We set up these awards to help us to continue to develop good links with the local community and to share our site best practices around safety and health to help others learn from our experience.

‘This term, the children in Sycamore Class have made the most effort and had the tidiest classroom, and so we went in to present the award and congratulate them.’

The school’s deputy head, Kelly Ryan, said: ‘A huge thank you to everyone at Tarmac for their very generous support.

‘This scheme has helped the children to learn to take more pride in their classroom environment and link good housekeeping with safety.

‘They have also learned more about the way people work at the Barnstone cement plant and how the team there keeps safe.’

The school is now working with Tarmac to come up with ideas for a new project, this time focusing on the environment.
