Tarmac graduates

Tim Gallagher, John Mawer and Steven Curtin graduate with BSc Hons degrees in Minerals Management

THREE employees from Tarmac are celebrating after graduating with BSc honours degrees in Minerals Management from the University of Derby.

Tim Gallagher, John Mawer and Steven Curtin (pictured left to right) were among eight people from across the mineral industry to gain the prestigious qualification at the university’s annual degree ceremony. The degree will support the work each of them undertakes in their roles at Tarmac.

Commenting on his degree, newly qualified business manager John Mawer said: ‘The Minerals Management degree course was a fantastic opportunity which allowed me to challenge my own thoughts and opinions, develop a more strategic management approach to our business and identify areas to drive opportunities.’

Steve Curtin, area operations manager, added: ‘The skills and insight that I have gained as a result of the course will make a real difference to my day-to-day role in driving operational excellence within the business.’

Tarmac’s senior vice-president, Martin Riley, who was present at the awards ceremony commented: ‘I’d like to congratulate Tim, John and Steve on completing their Minerals Management degrees. I am passionate about ensuring this business creates opportunities for all employees to learn and develop new skills at every stage within their career.

‘Whether they’re a new apprentice or have worked in the industry for 20 years, everyone has an opportunity to make their mark, which is something I’m very proud of.’

A further 10 Tarmac employees were awarded professional qualifications at the annual awards ceremony. More than 75 of the company’s employees are currently studying at the University of Derby on industry-related diplomas and degree programmes.

Inspiring people to take up careers within quarrying and construction is the core aim of Tarmac’s new ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign. It features employees talking passionately about their career journey, and the role they play in shaping UK infrastructure.

Developed in partnership with the Institute of Quarrying, the honours degree is designed specifically to prepare leaders and managers from the mineral extractives industry for the future. An experienced team from across the UK minerals industry lead the specialist degree course which includes modules on resource management and advanced extractives technology.
