Tarmac begin Knowsley road-maintenance contract

Tarmac and Knowsley Council

New era for Merseyside borough’s roads as five-year maintenance contract gets under way

TARMAC have begun their five-year highways maintenance contract with Knowsley Council to deliver surfacing, bridge and structures maintenance, gully cleansing, and footway and carriageway repairs.

Four apprenticeships are being created as part of the contract, reflecting Tarmac’s commitment to creating local jobs and providing opportunities for young people to begin careers in construction. The company has also committed to using local suppliers to support delivery of the contract wherever possible.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac’s contracting business, said: ‘This contract is a reflection of our strong track record in delivering high-quality, innovative highways maintenance for local authorities across the UK. We have a highly-skilled and experienced team working with colleagues in Knowsley to deliver a first-class service across the borough.’

Tarmac’s proven experience of working with clients on similar contracts, as well as their commitment to partnering, quality and delivery, were said to be key factors in securing the contract.

Speaking when Tarmac’s appointment was announced last November, Councillor Mike Murphy, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: ‘Knowsley’s highway network is one of the council’s most valuable assets so it is vital that we have the correct provision in place to ensure this is maintained.

‘We have recently been recognized as the best overall performer in the National Highways and Transport Survey 2015 and the new contract with Tarmac will deliver direct efficiencies for the council and give us a more flexible approach to the service, which is critical to our continued success in the current financial climate.

‘It will also positively support the local economy through employing local apprentices and using local sub-contractors.’
