Sykes Pumps play key role at Borras Quarry

Two Super Wispaset pumps maintain process water recirculation at Tarmac sand and gravel operation

HIRE specialist Sykes Pumps have supplied two Super Wispaset pumps to ensure the smooth operation of the processing plant at Tarmac’s Borras Quarry, near Wrexham, in North Wales.

The quarry is a key supplier of building sand and gravel to the construction industry, and Sykes Pumps are on hand to ensure that water used in the washing of sand and gravel is recirculated around a series of on-site lagoons.

The two 8in diesel Super Wispaset pumps have been supplied to move water from one of these lagoons to the clean water lagoon that supplies the washing process plant.

One pump is used continuously while the plant is in operation, with the second used intermittently in 11–13h shifts to move additional water when required.

The lead pump is supplied with fuel from a large, external diesel tank, while the second pump runs off its own integral belly tank.

‘The pumps have proved reliable and they’ve been working really well for us,’ said quarry manager Paul Watson. ‘The hire package includes a service every 14 days from Sykes and we are safe in the knowledge that their engineers are available on call-out at all times.’
