Sunderland waste-management firm goes under

Alex Smiles Ltd fall into administration triggering more than 50 job losses

ALEX Smiles have gone into administration following the loss of a major contract. Steven Ross and Allan Kelly, both of Baker Tilly Restructuring and Recovery, were appointed as administrators of the company on 7 May 2015.

The Sunderland-based firm, which specialized in the collection, processing and recycling of waste materials, has since stopped trading after 42 years in business. More than 50 redundancies have been confirmed as a result of the collapse.

Alex Smiles were set up in 1973 by husband and wife, Alex and Jane Smiles, who grew the business to employ as many as 80 staff at one point. From its Sunderland base, the firm developed its recycling operations from construction hardcore and other materials to produce/supply seven different recyclables.

Earlier this year, local media reported that Alex Smiles had been served with legal notices by the Environment Agency relating to over-accumulation of waste at their nine-acre site. One of the notices required the firm to reorganize waste piles at the site, which were said to pose a fire hazard.
