SteelStop named Slag Product of the Year

SteelStop

Harsco slag product earns top honours at 11th Annual Global Slag Conference in London

HARSCO Corporation’s proprietary road-surfacing material known as SteelStop has been named Slag Product of the Year at the 11th Annual Global Slag Conference, which took place recently in London.

SteelStop is a formulated high-friction surfacing material (HFS), which means that it carries proven road safety advantages for situations where there is a high risk of skidding, such as approaches to traffic lights, pedestrian crossing or intersections.

The material is applied as a surface treatment to increase the skid resistance of existing road surfaces, and has been assessed for use through the British Board of Agrément, in line with the testing requirements of the Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS).

Harsco’s SteelPhalt business, a unit of the company’s Metals & Minerals division, has been producing slag-based asphalt products in the UK for more than 50 years, leading the drive for sustainable asphalt materials produced almost entirely from recycled content.

Steel slag is well suited for use as a surface course for road making thanks to a number of  inherent properties, including: exceptional strength and durability, which extends the life of the road and lengthens road maintenance intervals; and high skid resistance that is maintained throughout the life of the road, based on slag’s capacity to regenerate its surface roughness over time.

Moreover, the use of steel slag also helps avoid the depletion of valuable quarried natural resources and the landfill of by-products through effective and responsible recycling.

Harsco’s Metals & Minerals division is the largest and most comprehensive provider of on-site material processing and environmental services to the global metals industry, with operations at approximately 140 customer sites across more than 30 countries.

The division is a technology partner to cleaner, more efficient metal production, providing customers with economically and environmentally viable solutions for the treatment and reuse of production waste streams.
