Shropshire students learn from Bayston Hill visit
Civil engineering students gain an insight into the opportunities available and skills needed in the industry
EMPLOYEES at Tarmac’s Bayston Hill Quarry have been working with Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT) to provide civil engineering students with an insight into the opportunities available and skills needed in the industry.
Level-two apprentices from the college went on a tour of the quarry to see the end-to-end process of stone extraction.
The students also learned about tendering and estimating for construction projects from civil engineering contractors McPhillips and building contractors Paveaways, who visited the college.
David Sycamore, asphalt plant manager at Tarmac, said: ‘It was very encouraging and rewarding to have the opportunity to introduce the younger generation to the industry, and to show the diverse career opportunities on offer and projects we work on. We were more than happy to host the students and hope they gained a lot from the visit.’
Jeff Fletcher, senior construction tutor at TCAT, said: ‘We are always keen to give students the chance to learn from the experts, which is why we have built strong links with local companies.
‘We are grateful to the support shown by the likes of Tarmac, McPhillips, Ringway Jacobs and Paveaways – it is important for students to gain as much real work experience as possible, and get the chance to meet some of the many locally based civil engineering experts.’
