Riney secure £70m+ Bromley highways contracts

Company awarded both major and minor work highways contracts across the borough

FOLLOWING a competitive tender process, the London Borough of Bromley has awarded its major and minor work highways contracts to JB Riney & Co Ltd, who were acquired by Tarmac in May 2017.

The contracts involve planned footway and road resurfacing, public realm improvements, traffic schemes, street lighting and highway drainage, as well as the provision of winter maintenance services and smaller reactive minor work, including pothole repairs and replacing broken paving slabs.

‘Residents expect, quite rightly, roads to be well maintained, allowing easy travel around the borough whether for work, leisure or business. Our philosophy, therefore, is to invest in major resurfacing and reconstruction projects, which means that as there are fewer minor repairs to do, it’s more cost-effective in the longer term,’ said Councillor William Huntington-Thresher, Executive Councillor for Environment (right of photo).

‘Although we still tackle the smaller jobs such as repairing potholes, preserving and maintaining roads and pavements increases their longevity. We will continue with this and the new contactor will carry out all planned major work along with the small-scale day-to-day jobs.’

The Council is responsible for the borough’s 856 miles of footway and 552 miles of road, and, as the single most valuable asset, the gross replacement cost would be in excess of £1 billion.

The highways maintenance contracts are valued at more than £70 million over their eight-year duration, with an optional one-year extension. The new contracts started on 1 July 2018.
