New Terex Finlay machine helps double IBA production

Terex Finlay 693+ Spaleck Supertrak

Processing of incinerator bottom ash at Teesside facility soars following arrival of 693+ Spaleck Supertrak

PRODUCTION at a processing facility in Middlesbrough, Teesside, has soared following the arrival of a new screening plant. The Terex Finlay 693+ Spaleck Supertrak, supplied by Finlay Plant Northern for Norman Watson Haulage and Plant Hire, is processing double the amount of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) than previously seen at the facility.

Norman Watson are working at full capacity out on site, with no downtime, since investing in the machine. The company, operating from a 300-acre farm in Teesdale, offers five loading shovels and now the Terex Finlay 693+ Spaleck Supertrak for hire in the Teesside, Tilbury and Sheffield areas.

Norman Watson, managing director, said: ‘Ash is a hard-to-process material and the meshes on the previous screener had to be pressure washed six times a day to clear them. The Terex Finlay 693+ Spaleck Supertrak was delivered six weeks ago and has never been blocked up yet. We’ve found that the amount of time it saves us is absolutely fantastic and means we’re able to process far more material than before.’

The plant, which features a double-deck 20ft x 5ft Spaleck screenbox, is fed with IBA – the residual product of energy recovered from household waste. Metals are extracted from the material beforehand whilst the rest is processed by the machine t create a sustainable source of aggregate diverted from landfill.

Three fractions are being produced by the Terex Finlay 693+ Spaleck Supertrak. The oversize is being used as sub-base and the middle size is being utilized for pipe bedding and pea gravel, while the –5mm is being sent to aggregate block plants for the production of concrete blocks in construction.

Incorporating a twin undercarriage, the screener offers maximum on-site mobility by hand-held remote control. Change out times are kept to a minimum due to a combination of quick wedge tensioning on the top deck and hydraulic tensioning on the bottom deck.

Mr Watson said: ‘This is the first machine that I’ve had from Finlay Plant Northern and I haven’t been disappointed. Finlay Plant Northern has been great to deal with and knowing we have the service and backup is great comfort.’

Charlie Nairn, managing director of Finlay Plant Northern, added: ‘Norman Watson Haulage and Plant Hire came to us because their previous screener couldn’t cope with the damp material that needed to be processed. However, the Spaleck heavy-duty vibrating screen optimizes productivity of moisture-high materials.’
