University of Derby Corporate to offer groundbreaking new course in construction materials technology

A NEW Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Materials Technology will be available from September 2012, providing a unique development pathway for new entrants into a number of related industries.

Offered through the University of Derby Corporate, the new Higher Apprenticeship – a first for the industry – has been developed with the Institute of Quarrying, Institute of Asphalt Technology and the Concrete Society.

It has been designed to address the UK’s ongoing need for higher-level skills and to bring new talent in to the future management of one of the country’s key industries.

The course will cover the extractives, concrete technology, asphalt and clay technology industries, and will be delivered through blended learning – a combination of online study and face-to-face sessions.

It will combine the development of the skills, competence and knowledge required to prepare participants for a supervisory role in their particular field.

David Sharman, corporate director of Hanson, who are offering the Higher Apprenticeship to a group of new employees, said: ‘This is a terrific course which has been developed in partnership between our industry and the University of Derby Corporate.

‘It offers young people a great opportunity to develop a highly rewarding career in the industry. At the same time, it has the potential to provide the next generation of business leaders and managers. Our products are basic but essential, and they are going to be around for a long time to come, so succession planning is critical to the company’s long-term future.’

Paul Wilkinson, head of corporate partnerships at the University of Derby Corporate, added: ‘By collaborating with the Institute of Quarrying, Institute of Asphalt Technology and the Concrete Society, we are able to ensure the course content is aligned with industry requirements, fully equipping employees with the skills, knowledge and competence required to further their career.’
