New engineering opportunities for young people in Ayrshire

The Prince’s Trust and Barr work together to launch a first for Ayrshire – Get into Civil Engineering

THE Prince’s Trust and Barr have established a corporate partnership to launch the ‘Get into Civil Engineering’ programme. The programme will be the first of its type available to 16-to-25-year-olds who are currently unemployed in Ayrshire.

The Prince’s Trust, a youth charity that helps change young lives, and Barr, a leading local provider of construction materials, road construction solutions and environmental and recycling services, have recognized the need to develop skills in civil engineering in Ayrshire. They are working in conjunction with education and training company Edutrain to deliver the programme.

The programme will consist of a free four-week training course held at Barr’s Ayrshire base in Killoch, Cumnock. The training programme will provide introductory training in a number of areas across Barr’s business, including: quarrying; road construction and road maintenance; recycling and waste management; related plant and equipment; quality control; and health and safety.

The programme is scheduled to start on 28 July 2014, and every trainee that is successfully enrolled on the Get into Civil Engineering programme is guaranteed an interview for Barr’s apprenticeship programme, which will commence this September.

Commenting on the Get into Civil Engineering programme, Bill Weir, Barr’s managing director, said: ‘We employ more than 100 people across Ayrshire at our quarry and environmental facilities in the region. We recognize a need to attract additional local talent to our business and believe that investing in apprentices is critical to our long-term development.

‘We are delighted to be a partner of The Prince’s Trust, who have an outstanding pedigree in transforming young lives, and look forward to welcoming and supporting those candidates that join this programme.’

Allan Watt, director of The Prince’s Trust, Scotland, continued: ‘The Prince’s Trust is delighted to help young people ‘Get into Civil Engineering’ with a fantastic package of training and hands-on experience. Thanks to our work with Barr, we will be able to give even more young people across Ayrshire the chance to reach their full potential.

‘Our ‘Get into’ programme brings together employers and The Prince’s Trust to offer courses in everything from civil engineering to cooking. We would love to hear from any young person who wants to find out what opportunities we can offer to help them get a job, an education or start their own business.’

The course is available to those who are between 16 and 25 years of age in Ayrshire and unemployed. To register interest or find out more, contact The Prince’s Trust on tel: (0141) 204 4409; or email: general.scotland@princes-trust.org.uk.
