Market for SuDS products to rise by 20%

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

BDS Marketing Research publish new report on Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

FOLLOWING regulation changes introduced this month, the market for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) is expected to rise by 20% by 2017, according to a new 30-page market sector survey published by BDS Marketing Research.

From April 2015, all new housing applications in excess of 10 units as well as larger commercial projects need a suitable SuDS system put in place, unless they can be deemed to be inappropriate.

Commenting on the report, Julian Clapp of BDS Marketing Research said: ‘We do not expect a sudden increase in demand. It will take time for these schemes to be consented and then construction to start.

‘However, the new regulations will have a significant impact on manufacturers in the medium term. We interviewed a wide range of architects, civil engineers, landscape designers and house builders. More than 70% of respondents interviewed expect to see a noticeable increase.’

The BDS report looks at the various solutions such as permeable and porous paving systems, soakaways, prefabricated cellular systems and natural ponds.

Within the various paving systems on offer, BDS estimate that concrete block permeable paving represents around 70% of the market. Competing products include resin-bound materials such as porous asphalt, and cellular systems.

The consultancy expects the share of permeable paving to increase. It says one of the greatest impacts of the new legislation will be in housing, with permeable paving already widely used in the sector. Porous asphalt was found to be more widely used in car parks, housing estate roads and cycle paths.

The report, entitled ‘Survey into the market and potential for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems’, is likely to be of interest to all manufacturers of systems and products able to satisfy the new requirements for SuDS.
