Lafarge win eco award for runway works

Company receives award for Best Environmental Initiative from Airport Operators Association

LAFARGE Contracting have been rewarded for their efforts to protect the environment during airport runway works on the Orkney Islands. The division, part of Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK, won the Best Environmental Initiative in the Airport Operators Association (AOA) Annual Awards.

AOA board members, who decided on the winners, congratulated Lafarge Contracting for ‘particular excellence and dedication in their field’.

The winning nomination focused on runway rehabilitation services provided to Highlands & Islands Ltd for Kirkwall Airport, which is situated on the largest of more than 70 islands the make up the Orkney archipelago.

Andy Ince, director of contracting for Lafarge A&C UK, said: ‘While Lafarge Contracting always work to minimize their impact on the environment, this was even more important at Kirkwall because the Orkney Islands are a natural wildlife centre and the works fell within a coastal protection zone.

‘To receive this award is a testament not only to the commitment and effort of the contracting team in ensuring our works did not impact on the environment, but a recognition of the importance Lafarge, as a company, place on operating as sustainably as possible.’

Actions concentrated on eliminating waste, cutting carbon output and minimizing potential for accidental damage.

To solve the problem of waste disposal all excavated material was put to use for other purposes on site. Earthworks were used to create a bund for the fire training areas – providing a reduction in visual impact and noise pollution – and all the planings were used for works on the runway and service areas.

With no waste material to be taken off site, lorry movements were reduced by around 200 loads, significantly cutting carbon emissions and limiting local disruption.

Transport impact was further decreased by using local asphalt suppliers. All 24,500 tonnes of asphalt for the project was locally supplied by Highland Quarries, a government-owned plant.
