Glendinning look to extend Linhay Hill Quarry

Ian Glendinning

Company says extension vital to secure the long-term future of the Devon limestone quarry

E&JW Glendinning Ltd are to submit a planning application in the summer of 2015 to Dartmoor National Park Authority proposing an extension to their Linhay Hill Quarry, near Ashburton, in Devon.

The existing limestone quarry will be economically viable for up to 12 years, but the proposed extension would secure the life of the site for 40 years or more.

The land for the proposed extension is owned by Glendinning on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park with the Devon Expressway road running along the eastern boundary. The extension itself would be on the north-eastern boundary of the existing quarry at Alston Fields.

Company chairman Ian Glendinning said: ‘We are very mindful that the established quarry is within the Dartmoor National Park but we will not be damaging protected open moorland. Best industry practice will be adopted to minimize the impact of the preparatory and extraction activity on the natural environment.’

Mr Glendinning (pictured) added: ‘Nothing is going to happen imminently on site but we must start planning for the future so that Linhay Hill Quarry can continue to support the local community and economy beyond 2027.’

E&JW Glendinning, an independent family-run business, were established in 1958 and currently employ 240 people across six sites in Devon and one in Cornwall.
