Glendinning create six new apprenticeships

Company addresses the need to secure the future of the business by creating six new apprenticeships

GLENDINNING, the largest family owned quarrying, concrete products and road contracting business in the Devon region, have announced the creation of six new apprenticeships – three in the company’s contracting division, two in fixed plant maintenance and one motor fleet maintenance fitter.

Managing director Barry Wilson said: ‘We have long been committed to apprenticeships and we know they have a positive effect on the business at a number of levels.

‘Apprentices address the need for succession; we are helping to train people to acquire the specific skills we require and we know from our experience that most apprentices stay with the job where they first learned their trade. Most of these new starters have an existing  family connection with the business, which is a great help too.

‘Apprenticeships are also a real morale booster for the business and help us to grow in a controlled manner.’

In 2010 Glendinning completed the construction of a new asphalt plant, and this year the company will complete the construction of a new crushing and screening operation at Linhay Hill Quarry, near Ashburton, making a total investment of £8 million.

Mr Wilson added: ‘New, specialist plant needs the right skills to operate it. Apprenticeships give us continuity in terms of skills and industry knowledge, and help to ensure Glendinning can continue to supply the range of construction materials required throughout the region.’
