Elcometer ultrasonic thickness gauge

Steel pipes and chutes used to transport sand and stone in quarries are often susceptible to collapse. The highly abrasive nature of the products they carry erodes the metal, which can cause significant problems when a hole leads to wastage and inconvenient downtime. The metal can also lose strength and bend under the weight of the load, reducing transporting efficiency or worse still, creating a health and safety hazard.

Such costly incidents can be easily avoided by regularly checking the thickness of the metal as it wears from the inside out. The Elcometer 208DL ultrasonic gauge –– manufactured by inspection equipment specialists Elcometer Instrument Ltd –– takes the guesswork out of assessing steel thickness in mineral transportation systems.

The inspection equipment measures steel thicknesses between 0.63mm and 500mm and ignores the thickness of the paint, so a true assessment of the metal thickness is measured.

Handheld and robust, the Elcometer 208DL is provided with a transducer although various other transducers are available for specific requirements. The 208DL stores the readings in a matrix, which can be transferred to the Elcometer EDCS software, allowing the user to:

  • send a report, which can be designed with a company logo, photographs and notes
  • create, delete and rename databases for storing the measurements
  • archive the data by creating folders
  • copy and paste into other document such as spreadsheets.
