Edge Hill University in Lancashire gets ready to host 17th biennial Extractive Industry Geology Conference
THE seventeenth biennial Extractive Industry Geology Conference will take place at Edge Hill University, near Ormskirk, in Lancashire, from 5–8 September 2012.
Organized by geo-professionals working within the non-petroleum extractive industry, the conference is an essential training event for all earth scientists wishing to keep abreast of current and future trends.
Day one of the conference’s lecture programme (Thursday 6 September) will include the Ansel Dunham Lecture, by Andrew Bloodworth, head of science – minerals and waste with the BGS, plus two other keynote presentations by Ken Hobden, director of planning with the MPA, and Viv Russell, regional operations director with Tarmac.
The keynote presentations will be followed by a further 16 lectures split into sessions under the following themes: Local Geology; Environmental; Aggregates (sand & gravel); Hydrogeology (karstic); and Industrial Minerals.
On day two (Friday 7 September), a further 21 lectures will complete the programme under the following session themes: Policy and Places; New Mineral Developments; Quarry Resources & Aggregate Quality; Environmental; Geotechnics; and Hydrogeology.
Optional field excursions to Chelford silica sand quarry (Sibelco) and Roan Edge and Shap Pink quarries (CEMEX) on Wednesday 5 September, and to Arcow Quarry (Tarmac) and Bellman Quarry and cement works (Hanson) on Saturday 8 September, form part of the conference programme.
