Doosan DX530LC-3 for David Smith Contractors

Doosan DX530LC-3 excavator

Crushing and screening contractor purchases first excavator from the Doosan range

ABERDEEN-based David Smith Contractors Ltd have purchased a new Doosan DX530LC-3 crawler excavator from Inverurie-based Balgownie Ltd, their local authorized Doosan and Bobcat dealers.

The 52-tonne Stage IIIB-compliant DX530LC-3 model is the largest excavator that David Smith Contractors have ever bought and the first from the Doosan range. Immediately upon its arrival, the excavator was set to work at the company’s new quarry near Inverurie.

David Smith Contractors acquired Smiddyburn Quarry five months ago and the DX530LC-3 excavator is being used to extract rock from the face and load it into crushing and screening equipment, to produce material for use in the company’s civil engineering projects across Aberdeenshire.

David Smith, managing director of David Smith Contractors, said: ‘Balgownie were able to offer us a very attractive package that provides us with a bigger machine with the muscle needed to work efficiently in the quarry. The productivity of the new Doosan excavator ensures we have a good supply of aggregate for our own projects, providing us with further cost-savings by allowing us to keep these substantial costs in-house.’

Reinforcing plates have been added, as standard, to the boom end on the DX530LC-3 excavator, as part of a design that ensures heavy-duty robustness throughout. The shape of the boom end has also been modified and the material for the boom main boss has been changed to cast steel to improve durability. Reinforcement plates on the inner boom and arm have also been repositioned to improve structural strength.

Mr Smith added: ‘With its wide undercarriage, the DX530LC-3 model offers exceptional stability and unmatched lifting capabilities. This is a mass-excavation machine fitted with an extra-heavy counterweight and a short front end to deliver more breakout force and tackle every tough digging job, so it will also be a very powerful tool for use on our own civils projects.’

Complementing operations in their own quarry, David Smith Contractors offer a complete crushing and screening service both in Scotland and across the UK, as well as providing a complete range of civil engineering services including bulk earthworks and GPS remodelling, demolition, drainage, decommissioning, and road construction.

Designed to be a leader in its weight class, the 52-tonne DX530LC-3 excavator is powered by an Isuzu AL-6WG1X common-rail, variable-geometry turbocharge, six-cylinder diesel engine, which provides 16% more power [290kW (389hp) at 1,800 rev/min], a 30% rise in displacement and a 50% increase in engine torque, compared with the previous DX520LC model.

In addition, new hydraulic pumps and valves increase digging forces by 3–6%, while lifting capacities at ground level have been increased by up to 9%. Moreover, new travel and swing components contribute to a 15% increase in drawbar pull to 38,800kg, while swing torque has been increased by 23% to 15,880kgm and the maximum travel speed has been increased by 10% to 5.8km/h.
