Tarmac win national award for excellence in social responsibility from Investors in People

TARMAC’s Contracting division has won a prestigious national Investors in People (IiP) award in recognition of the steps it has taken to embed corporate social responsibility across its operations. The company scooped the Excellence in Social Responsibility award at the event which celebrates companies that are leading the corporate social responsibility agenda.

Paul Fleetham (pictured), managing director of Tarmac Contracting, said: ‘This award win reflects the work we’re doing to minimize the impact of operations, while delivering wider social and economic benefits across our contracts, by creating new jobs and developing the skills of our existing workforce and new recruits.’

Tarmac’s commitment to social responsibility is underpinned by the company’s corporate sustainability strategy, which manages its approach across diverse operations – from offices to quarries and manufacturing plants – and is embedded across the business, shaping its engagement with customers and communities.

The award recognizes Tarmac’s success through the use of the company’s highways contracts with local authorities and network operators to deliver social value.

For example, as part of a long-term highways maintenance programme with Norfolk County Council, Tarmac have undertaken a range of activities to support a key contract objective of creating a sustainable workforce in the area, including hosting work placements, holding CV and interview skills sessions for JobCentre Plus and HMP Norwich, and supporting a STEM programme in local secondary schools promoting the study of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The corporate social responsibility accolade follows Tarmac’s recent retention of their Investors in People Gold accreditation in recognition of their approach to people development and the way the business communicates to employees on how they can support the company’s strategy and ongoing success.

Tarmac’s Contracting business has worked with IiP for the last 11 years and first gained national accreditation to the IiP standard in 2009 having previously received accreditation at a number of individual sites.
