CEMEX UK scoop top award for health and safety

John Crabbe Memorial Trophy winners

Company receives John Crabbe Memorial Trophy at MPA Health and Safety Awards 2015

CEMEX UK picked up the industry’s highest health and safety award, the John Crabbe Memorial Trophy, for overall ‘outstanding excellence in health and safety’ at this year’s Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health and Safety Awards – the second time in three years that the company has received the prestigious top trophy.

According to the 2015 judges, CEMEX UK excelled in four key areas: leadership training with visible felt leadership targets for all managers; health and well-being embedded as a core value; ‘stepping in’ to prevent unsafe behaviour as part of CEMEX UK’s culture at all levels; and strong contractor management.

The trophy was presented to CEMEX UK country president Jesus Gonzalez and health and safety director Andrew Taylor, at the annual MPA conference and awards event held at 30 Euston Square, London.

Mr Gonzalez commented: ‘Health and safety is our number-one priority for colleagues, contractors and those coming on to CEMEX sites. I am delighted that our industry and the independent judges are rewarding and recognizing the outstanding work we are doing to ensure everyone comes home safe at the end of the working day. Safety has no memory, so safe practices have to be in both our heads and our hearts, and a part of our DNA.’

As well as scooping the top award, CEMEX UK were presented with the Blue Circle Trophy in the Transport Initiatives category, for a campaign to reduce roll-overs by articulated trucks, and the BACMI Trophy for Contractors Safety, for measures to develop a strong safety partnership with contractors, with the aim of making ‘one team’ which constantly improves safety.

The company also received awards in the following categories: Engineering Initiatives; Reducing Occupational Road Risk; Occupational Health and Well-being; and Behavioural Safety. In addition, William Buckley, of CEMEX UK, and Graham Singleton, of CEMEX UK Marine, were among six individuals recognized for their personal health and safety contributions.
