CEMEX concrete for Riga port expansion

Riga Bulk Terminal

Company supplies over 3,500 cubic metres of concrete for state-of-the-art marine cargo terminal in Latvia

CEMEX have recently participated in the expansion of one of the most advanced marine cargo terminals in Latvia – the Riga Bulk Terminal.

Located in Kundzinsala, in Riga’s Northern District, the terminal is controlled by the Freeport of Riga and forms a key part of a global and regional cargo supply chain and passenger traffic network in the Baltic Sea region.

CEMEX in Latvia supplied more than 3,500 cubic meters of concrete for the construction of the base plate, walls and coverings for the terminal’s new loading point – a project that presented both logistical and construction challenges in order to supply record seasonal volumes of concrete through uninterrupted castings.

Moreover, the concrete for the base plate was designed to act as a floor for the loading point, which made it essential to ensure exact concreting at precise intervals to avoid joints between the multiple concrete layers.

For the construction of the 8m high walls of the loading point, CEMEX further ensured that the concrete was delivered with no interruptions.

‘The walls were built in a single casting, with concreting work performed at the rate of 10 cubic meters per hour, allowing the completion of several comparatively small castings within a 10-hour period,’ said Ojārs Lapsa, ready-mix sales representative for CEMEX in Latvia.

CEMEX also participated in the second stage of the expansion project, which involved the construction of automated storage facilities for up to 60,000 tonnes bulk cargo.

For this part of the project, the company supplied in excess of 3,200 cubic meters of concrete for the base plate, grid, wall covering and stairs in uninterrupted castings of approximately 500–600 cubic meters in 12-hour periods.
