Board changes at Glendinning

GLENDINNING, the West Country’s largest family owned quarrying, concrete products and road contracting business, have made two key changes to their board with the appointment of  a new managing director as well as the first third-generation family member to join the company.

Barry Wilson (pictured far right), the company’s current company secretary and board director responsible for human resources, has become managing director after 10 years service with Glendinning. He replaces Ian Ashford (far left), who is undergoing phased retirement after 43 years with the company, including 28 years at the helm.

In addition, Adam Somerscales (centre left), nephew of operations director Ian Glendinning (centre right), who is the eldest family member working in the business, becomes commercial director responsible for all the company’s commercial activities.

Founded as a limestone quarrying business at Linhay Hill, near Ashburton, Devon, in 1958, Glendinning now also operate from bases in Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay and Bude and employ a workforce of around 225. The recent board changes are part of a succession plan implemented around two years ago to maintain Glendinning’s 52-year tradition of being led by a non-family member.

Commenting on the changes, Ian Glendinning said: ‘We would like to express our sincere thanks to Ian Ashford for a long and proud association with my family’s business and to welcome Barry Wilson to his new role as managing director.

‘Barry has proven to be an excellent team member who will continue to bring strength and stability to the company as it trades through these most challenging times while continuing to invest for the future.’

Recent investments by Glendinning include the acquisition earlier this year of the hardstone quarry business of Penhill Quarry & Haulage Ltd, based near Bude, which has secured the supply of high-PSV aggregates for the company’s newly commissioned asphalt plant in Ashburton.

Outgoing managing director Ian Ashford added: ‘Adam’s appointment heralds a new and exciting phase in the history of Glendinning. Not only is he a third-generation family member who will contribute to maintaining the successful business model we have developed, his hands-on experience in diamond and mineral mining in Australia for RTZ will bring invaluable experience to the business.’
