Queen's 90th birthday beacon

Company lights up Bardon Hill site to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations

A BEACON to mark HM The Queen’s 90th birthday was lit during a special ceremony at Aggregate Industries’ Bardon Hill site in Coalville, Leicestershire, earlier this week.

The event, which coincided with beacons being lit across the UK as part of The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, took place at dusk on top of Bardon Hill – the highest point in Leicestershire – on Thursday 21 April.

The lighting was presided over by Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire; Andrew Lewer, MEP for the East Midlands; Councillor Nicholas Rushton, Leader of Leicestershire County Council; Councillor John Bridges, Chairman of North West Leicestershire Council; Councillor Terri Eynon; Councillor John Legrys; and François Pétry, chief executive officer of Aggregate Industries, in front of a number guests from the local community.

During the event, attendees heard speeches from Andrew Bridgen MP (left of photo) and François Pétry (right of photo), as well as music from the Snibston Co-operative Band. The official lighting was carried out by Mr Bridgen.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr Pétry said: ‘Bardon Hill is the highest point in Leicestershire and has been home to our business for more than 150 years. We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate this milestone and we’d like to thank everyone who joined us for this great celebration.

‘Aggregate Industries have laid the foundations for many a great Briton, providing materials for the Olympic Stadium and even laying asphalt at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle through our specialist surfacing business, Spadeoak.’

Mr Bridgen added: ‘The people of North West Leicestershire are rightly proud of HM Queen Elizabeth and I was delighted to be asked by Aggregate Industries to light the beacon in honour of her 90th birthday.

‘The evening was a great example of a community coming together to celebrate our shared admiration for the Royal Family and I would like to thank Aggregate Industries for putting together such an enjoyable event.’
