Ready-mixed concrete can be prepared either by:

• mixing the constituents in a fixed plant, or
• by feeding the constituents into a rotating barrel mounted upon a vehicle chassis, the truck mixer.  

Owing to the problems of proportioning materials of variable moisture content by weight, ready-mix is commonly mixed by volume.
