There are a number of options in the market place for drying materials, but looking at the lastest energy usage reviews, it shows that between 10 - 25% of the National Energy Usage, is associated with drying materials, which seems scandalously high.
I would be interested in comments associated with drying issues, and suggestions of technology available.

You are correct, this is a difficult area. Mechanical drying is always more energy efficient than thermal drying and is underused. Drying in stockpiles is very possible, but poor history of design and maintainabilty makes it unpopular. Asphalt and fine sands have lower limit to free and forced drainage that means some thermal input is still usually needed. Also time in stock is a factor so piles flexibilty and size is an issue.
