How does moving aggregate by rail reduce environmental impacts?

Anonymous asked the following:

I am looking for more information on the rationale for shifting the transportation of aggregates ... Read Full Question
This is not really a 'standards and specifications' question; it is more related to environmental management. It is all about length of haul from the railhead, which tends to be short in the UK. Also, UK practice is often to use the rail head location for the production of 'added value' products such as ready mixed concrete or bituminous mixtures (asphalt). The Mineral Products Association (MPA) are actively involved with the evaluation of environmental factors, so may be able to give you more specific information.

Can Double Surface Dressing Coating support very heavy 110tonnes vehicle movements?

Ian Kirk asked the following:

Currently based deepest part of Sahara, we have a haul road , graded Sahara plain .. 450Km long * ... Read Full Question
This requires a specialist consultants answer and a very detailed study of the existing conditions. Both are beyond the scope of this service. Surface dressing is a surface treatment that restores skid resistance adn helps to keep water out of surface that is lightly cracked. It cannot 'paper over' structural defects. Road 29 is no good to you because it is long out of date and does not cover heavy wheel loads, but TRL have published guidance about working in tropical conditions. A search through the TRL Library may be a helpful starting point - www.trl.co.uk/online_store/

With regard to C&D recycling, whats the definitive answer on when aggregate ceases to be waste

Anonymous asked the following:

I'm currently operating under an existing Paragraph 13 exemption. Local EA officers are saying ... Read Full Question
This requires a legal answer that I am not qualified to give. However, I believe that your local EA officer is correct. My understanding is that waste only becomes recycled aggregate when it is placed on the market as complying with a recognised EN Standard (or, in some cases, one of the earthworks categories in SHW). This requires compliance with requirements for Factory Production Control, as outlined in the WRAP Protocol. SHW Clause 710 also requires compliance with the WRAP Protocol for highway works. The Aggregain website may be useful source of additional information. I also understand that some of the rules will change over the coming weeks.

Do you have any statistics on annual UK aggregate export to Belgium

dreesenr asked the following:

In order to have an idea of the import/export streams of construction minerals (e.g. aggregates) ... Read Full Question
Sorry, but no. This is outside the scope of Agg-Net because it does not involve technical expertise. I believe that the Mineral Products Association (MPA) collate statisitics on behalf of its members. You could also try asking the equivalent trade association in Belgium.

Sorry, but this question is beyond the scope of Agg-Net. You need specialist support from an experienced consultant. If you click on the button to the bottom right hand side of the Agg-Net page, you can access a list of Quarry Consultants. 47 are listed. Question 1 - is the rock good enough to meet the requirements of potential customers?

Calculation on Dredger capacity in metric tonnes per hours in terms of extraction of sand from rivers?

alexandc asked the following:

I would very much like to know the extraction of sand in metric tonnes for suction pump type ... Read Full Question
This is not my field of expertise, but I think the two parameters are not connected. Pump capacity tells you about extraction rate. The size of the vessel tells you how much sand and gravel can be stored on board before it needs return for unloading. The vessel size may also be dictated by conditions in the river. I think you need to ask for pump rating.

Where can I find out about aggregate recycling (C&D waste) across Europe / World

les.andrews asked the following:

I recently took our draft Aggregates Recycling DPD to County Council Members for approval to ... Read Full Question
The best source of information about all things recycled is WRAP - the Waste and Recycling Action Programme, based in Banbury. WRAP are funded by Government. Their website - aggregain.org.uk - is extensive. Ring them if you are still struggling. The Minerals Products Association (MPA) - previously QPA - also hold data about recycling, but I do not know if they have data from outside the UK. I do know that the UK compares favourably with most of Europe. It gets a bit tricky to provide answers for an individual county because of 'cross border' trading, particularly as you are so close to London.

What are the present uses of recycled aggregates(20mm&14mm) in the UK for production of new readymix and what are constraints.

trbuxton asked the following:

We are a recycler of concrete derived from various sources(1) Crushed from demolition concrete(2) ... Read Full Question
The best source of information about recycled aggregates is aggregain.org.uk. This website is managed by WRAP and has lots of useful advice. If you type in 'concrete' as a keyword for search, there are a number of papers about concrete used as aggregate in concrete. The standard for concrete (BS 8500) differentiates between recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and recycled aggregate containing other demoltion wastes (RA).
